Ortho-K FAQs
How Ortho-K Works
This non-surgical treatment uses specially-designed contact lenses to gently reshape the front surface of the eye. Similar to a custom dental retainer from an orthodontist, worn overnight to correct the alignment of teeth, these lenses are made specifically for your unique eyes. Once these overnight corneal reshaping lenses are removed in the morning, your eyes naturally maintain the adjusted shape, you child has clear vision all day, without the need for daytime contact lenses or glasses.

To maintain the effect of myopia reduction, overnight lens wear must be continued as prescribed by your doctor. Ortho-K can be used for a lifetime.

Why is this being prescribed
Ortho-K lenses are typically utilized as a treatment for Myopia in children. The lenses work to slow down, and sometimes stop, a child’s vision from continuing to deteriorate.
Higher levels of myopia significantly increase the risk for serious eye diseases. Untreated kids may have very high prescriptions as adults. Glasses only compensate for blurry distance vision, they don’t stop the vision from continuing to worsen.
For Adults Too
Adults can utilize the benefits of Ortho-K too. Although these lenses will not affect the level of myopia, they WILL give the result of clear daytime vision without the need for glasses or contacts. This is a great alternative to vision corrective surgeries like LASIK.

What to Expect 1st Visit
Your eye doctor will review your vision history and evaluate your eyes, measuring the shape of the eyes, the amount of myopia, and the health of the eyes.
Utilizing advanced technology, special measurements will be taken so your doctor can order contact lenses specifically customized to your eyes.

Ongoing Care
Following the 1st exam, your eye doctor will order lenses made specifically for your unique eyes.
You’ll return to the office once the lenses arrive, where your doctor will check how the lenses fit, and teach you (or your child) proper application / removal techniques, as well as proper lens cleaning and care.
After this visit, routine follow-up visits will be utilized to provide continuous care as you progress with Ortho-K treatment. These visits may only be needed one time per year once the lenses and vision correction have been finalized.
